What is vertical dance?

Vertical dance aka wall dance aka wall running is a movement art that uses rock climbing equipment to transform a wall into the dance floor. Whether indoors or on the side of a building, the changed relationship with gravity creates seemingly impossible, high-flying, mesmerizing dance.

What does “free harness” refer to?

“Free harness” is a blanket term for connecting a dancer from a waist harness with a front point (traditionally a climbing harness) to a ceiling point that is independent from a wall. this set up enables the artist to glide, float, spin and hover in surreal, beautiful and acrobatic ways.

Although specific terms for various heights can be helpful for clarity, it is a family that includes similar types of strength, grace and skill. Each style flows into another, its versatility allows for personalization

Popular terminology

  • When a dancer is low to the floor, gliding and dancing, it is often called “low flow harness.

  • When a dancer is high enough that their feet cannot touch the floor (generally at least four feet between the floor and their feet), often high enough that they cannot be reached by a person standing on the floor, it is sometimes called “podding” or “high harness.

  • When the dancer is high enough to invert without hitting their head, but low enough to ground themselves for floor movement, it is often referred to as “aerial dance in harness” or “harness dance”
